WELLINGTON, FLA – Wellington Bay, a luxury senior living community, has announced a new environmental and wellness initiative in partnership with urban beekeeping company Alvéole.
The community is now hosting an on-site honey bee colony, bringing nature, interactive programming and environmental sustainability directly to its residents.
Through the partnership, Alvéole provides a fully managed, turn-key honey bee program that includes a living beehive, hands-on seasonal workshops led by certified beekeepers and a digital engagement platform to track local biodiversity metrics.
The initiative brings nature into the heart of the community while encouraging resident engagement and environmental stewardship.
The introduction of the hive aligns with growing scientific evidence highlighting the mental health benefits of beekeeping for older adults. A study from Temple University explored therapeutic beekeeping as a novel tool to support emotional wellness, mindfulness, and social connection among seniors.
Lead researcher Meghan Robertson, an occupational therapy doctoral student at Temple’s Barnett College of Public Health, noted that engaging with hives helps combat isolation and builds self-confidence during major life transitions, demonstrating that combining nature and hands-on learning fosters a sense of purpose and focus.
“We are so excited to launch this unique venture at Wellington Bay,” said Jay Mikosch, Executive Campus Director at Wellington Bay. “Partnering with Alvéole allows us to bring another nature-based experience to our campus that not only supports local biodiversity, but also enriches the daily lives of our residents. The impact of the new bee colony extends directly to Wellington Bay’s kitchens with Chef Joshua Crane incorporating the fresh, hyper-local honey harvested from the hive into special meal preparations, handcrafted dishes and seasonal menus for residents. In addition, prospective residents touring Wellington Bay will receive custom-labeled, small honey jars as a sweet takeaway from their visit.
By blending environmental responsibility, culinary craft, and resident wellness, Wellington Bay continues to set a benchmark for innovative senior living.
