Skate to Save Lives: Bartle BBQ Hang Returns to West Palm Beach With World Skateboarding Champion Alex Sorgente

Written By: The Wellington Edit

Skate for a cause and savor delicious barbecue at the 3rd Annual Bartle BBQ Hang on Saturday, September 13. The family-friendly event will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the National Croquet Center in West Palm Beach. Enjoy a barbecue feast, live music by Surfer Blood, a skateboarding competition, a bounce house, and fun activities for all ages. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Cory Bartle Memorial Fund, providing lifesaving recovery scholarships.

Event chair, James Bartle of SandyJames Fine Food & Productions, founded the Bartle BBQ Hang in honor of his nephew, Cory Bartle, who passed away from an accidental overdose at the age of 34 in 2022. In honor of Cory’s life, his family established the Cory Bartle Memorial Fund with Hanley Foundation to support efforts to combat addiction and raise awareness about the devastating effects of substance use disorder (SUD).

“Cory was a culinary artist with a deep love for skateboarding, so we brought his passions together in a meaningful event that celebrates his spirit and supports a cause close to all of our hearts,” said James Bartle, cofounder and proprietor of SandyJames Fine Food & Productions. “By partnering with Hanley Foundation, we aim to provide resources and support to young people in our community who have been affected by addiction.”

Guests will get to skate with World Skateboarding Championship winner and Boynton Beach native, Alessandro “Alex” Sorgente. Sorgente competed in the international amateur Bowl Rider circuit, earning back-to-back victories in the prestigious Vans Combi Pool Amateur Series, and the title of Grind for Life Champion for five consecutive years. In 2016, he won gold in the park event at the World Skateboarding Championship.

Sorgente will join skateboard professional Mike Rogers for the BBQ Hang’s skateboard clinic and best tricks competition, with prizes for all skill levels. With 27 years in recovery, Rogers is passionate about Hanley’s mission. He is a frequent competitor at many big-name skating events around the world, including the Vans Pro-Tec Pool Party, the Vans Bowl-A-Rama at Bondi Beach, and the Clash at Clairemont.

Donations made to the Cory Bartle Memorial Fund, which is managed by Hanley Foundation, will provide scholarships for individuals with SUD who otherwise could not afford treatment. The fund will also support efforts to educate individuals and their families about SUD and the path to recovery, aiming to break the cycle of addiction and overdose for everyone affected.

Tickets for the 3rd Annual Bartle BBQ Hang are $50 per adult, with a special rate of $35 for junior registration (ages 13 to 30). The event is free for children age 12 and younger. For more information about tickets or sponsorship opportunities, visit hanleyfoundation.org/events/bbq/.
